When we discuss tipping culture, we always get to the same conclusion. It probably wouldn't be needed if restaurants paid their servers more than minimum wage, but it would imply an increase in food prices. But today the argument is different. We aren't really discussing if a server deserves a 20% tip. We are discussing if a girl who puts up a lemon stand and overcharges it because it's the only drink available in that place is allowed to guilt-trip people into tipping by yelling out loud the question "do you want to leave a tip?". And… is it? Well, that is something we can either agree or disagree on, but it probably won't stop this girl from doing it.
I can definitely agree on two things about the story below. Firstly, $11 for a glass of lemonade is insane. It's not just overpriced. It's literally more expensive than buying a lemonade soda from the supermarket. Secondly, asking for a tip after paying an overpriced amount for a lemonade glass is also insane. Especially if we take into account that this business was in a food truck, so tipping isn't really something you should expect. It's almost like a self-service. But I do agree on one thing: the girl has the right to ask for a tip, and you, as a customer, have the right to say no. She can ask. Whether it makes you uncomfortable or puts you in a weird position is your problem. She can definitely ask for a tip in her business. And you are a grown adult. If you can't say no and feel guilt-tripped, then it's your problem. That girl had every right to ask for a tip, and it is your responsibility to say no if you don't want to give it.
So really, is the problem tipping or the fact that the girl asked you out loud and you couldn't deal with the shame? If you were sure you didn't want to tip for an overpriced lemonade, then why don't you just do it? It's not that hard. How it makes YOU feel being asked for a tip is yours, and just your, problem. The girl had the right to ask. This user should have had the courage to speak up for himself instead of complaining online about it.
